Dr. Lee looked exasperated as Vala tossed the electronic device to measure brain waves onto the table. He hurried from behind the table with the monitoring equipment and took the second device before she could toss it too.
"This is a waste of time." She complained.
"Do me a favor, shut up." Daniel replied, glasses dangling from his lips.
"It's not like I wanted this to happen anyway, I'm being realistic, he has no idea what he's doing."
"I'm standing right here." Dr. Lee looks to Daniel for help.
Daniel removes his glasses from his mouth.
"He can do all the tests he wants, it's not going to get us anywhere." She replies looking at Bill.
"Look, I know we're scraping the bottom of the barrel here but it's not like we have a lot of choice unless you happen to know someone else who understands this technology." Daniel answers back.
Bill looks at Daniel.
The men turn to Vala when she doesn't reply, they find her looking away.
"You know someone? Someone who can help us?" Daniel asks.
"No..."
Daniel stands and looks at her.
"...and yes."
Daniel removes the devices from his own head.
"Wait, wait, we're not done here!" Bill protests.
Daniel hands Bill the monitoring wires and stands in front of Vala.
"Who?!?" Daniel puts his glasses on and stares down at her.
"A scientist who studied the bracelets at one point."
"Well let's go see him!" Daniel grabs her arm and pulls her to her feet.
"No. Out of the question." She pulls away.
"Why?"
"I'd rather not say."
"He's the guy you stole the bracelets from, right?!?"
Bill sits down to wait out another one of their arguments.
"How dare you assume I acquired those bracelets through anything but honest means, I may have a less than perfect reputation--"
Daniel closes his eyes to control his rising anger but it doesn't help his rising voice.
"You told me you stole them!" He opens his eyes and glares at her.
"Did I?"
"Yes!"
"Oh...anyway, he won't help us."
"Correction, he won't help you." Daniel smiles smugly.
Vala looks him over.
"Fine, but if we're going, we need a change of clothes."
"Fine." Daniel replies and leads her out of the lab.
"Shoulda seen it coming." Daniel muttered looking himself over.
"Jackson, let's go!" Mitchell called.
Daniel heard the chevrons being called and walked into the gateroom and over to the ramp where Mitchell waited, he refused to look at Vala.
"Remind me to burn these pants when we get back." He muttered.
"When in Rome..." Mitchell grinned patting his leather pants.
"They wore togas." Daniel retorted.
"And you think that's better?"
'Chevron seven...locked.'
'Good luck.' Landry called over the p.a. system.
Mitchell nodded and led Daniel toward the gate.
''And Daniel...'' Vala stepped up beside him.
Daniel stopped but didn't look at her.
''...you look sensational.''
Daniel clenched his fist and stalked into the wormhole behind Mitchell.
Daniel returned to his office after checking with Bill on any, he fervently hoped, progress on separating he and Vala, to his surprise she was gone and his thoughts turned to the upcoming meeting with the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, somehow they had to get him to keep up their financing instead of slashing it for the Atlantis expedition. He wondered if his position would have been reversed had he actually made it to Atlantis? With a sigh he picked up the catalog Vala left behind and flipped through it. Like I would ever let her loose with my credit card. Machello did enough damage to it seven years ago! Picking up the phone, he called security to see where Vala was and told she was in her quarters. He retrieved his spare pair of glasses, grabbed his laptop and headed to his quarters.
Vala stretched and sat up. She wished she had brought her clothing through with her, the drab color scheme of this place was getting to her. She lifted the green t-shirt and made a face. Two days of wearing it and she wanted to scream. Tossing the covers back she climbed out of bed and headed for the bathroom wondering what to say at the meeting the next day. Her hand grabbed the door frame and she turned back to see a package on the chair, looking around she non-chalantly started for it then ran over and grabbed it tearing it open. She gaped to see the black top and leather skirt she had circled in the catalog, there was a bathrobe and slippers not to mention a red tank and briefs among a few other pieces of clothing she had liked in the catalog. Wonder who did this? Daniel maybe? Like he ever would! Mitchell? Maybe Landry...I do like older men. She chuckled at that thought. Well, I'm not one to turn down free gifts...
After a quick shower she located another black shirt and leather pants and donned them then opened the door.
"I'm famished."
"Good, you're up, I need some coffee." Daniel said exiting his own room.
"Do all Earth people live on that disgusting drink?" She asked walking beside him.
"No."
"Oh...just you then."
Daniel gave her a look and pushed the mess door open.
Vala had grumbled and complained all afternoon until Daniel had requested, with clenched teeth, that she be escorted to the rec. room. He reveled in the peace and quiet and got a lot of work done.
"Hey, thought I'd give you a heads up..."
"On what?" Daniel asked distractedly.
"Your girl friend beat the Marines at cards...repeatedly." Mitchell replied.
"Not my problem."
"Not sure they'll see it that way."
"Well, maybe she can slap a bracelet on them and they can have her around twenty-four/seven!"
"She really that bad?" Mitchell chuckled.
"Like a dripping faucet." Daniel rubbed his face.
"Too bad, she's gonna be around for a while." Mitchell mused.
"Speaking of annoying..." Daniel looked at him.
"Don't forget, your plane leaves at nine." Mitchell headed for the door.
Daniel glanced at the clock and saw it was almost ten, with a sigh he turned off the lights and headed for his quarters.
"Get out! Go!"
Vala closed Daniel's door behind her and sauntered to her room.
"Thanks for being a sweetheart." She winked at Airman Foster, another woman, as she slipped into her room.
One side of Foster's lips lifted.
Too bad he tossed you out...though you got closer than most of us. Doc. Jackson is one hot guy, most of the women on base would love to take to his bed...some of the men too.
She swallowed back a snort as Colonel Mitchell appeared.
"Daniel and Vala in for the night?"
"Yes sir."
Mitchell nodded and headed for the elevator.
Some of them have eyed him too...
Daniel changed for bed and sighed. He had to admit to being flattered that she would come onto him...but that wouldn't be the sexiest outfit to do it in... Damn! She played me again! He sat on the bed and wondered if she was ever innocent or truly caring, did the Goa'uld do that to her? Make her a scheming thief?
"Not like she'd ever tell me." He looked toward the door, turned out the light and slid under the covers.
A low growl came from his throat as he turned the light back on and looked under the covers to find the bed short-sheeted.
"Vala!" He hissed then kicked the covers off, turned the light out again and went to sleep.
Daniel looked out the window as they flew to D.C. A smile crept to his lips at the memory of Teal'c taking pity on him and forcing Vala to sit on the other side of the plane next to the imposing former First Prime.
"An al'kesh would have been faster." She complained.
Daniel closed his eyes and silently sighed.
"And difficult to explain." Landry said humorously beside Daniel.
Daniel felt the stress drain away as he drifted toward sleep.
I'm sorry but there's no way to separate you two.
WHAT?!?
You two will be very happy, she's a great gal, Arlos nodded then leaned in toward Daniel, just watch the heirlooms.
Come on Daniel, let's make it official and start making babies!
Noooooooooooooooooooooo!
"Jackson!"
Daniel jerked awake.
"Bad dream?" Landry asked.
Daniel glanced across the aisle.
"Nightmare." He muttered.
"What's that pointy thing, it reminds me of a man's--"
"VALA!" All three men glared at her.
"What?" She smirked back.
Daniel adjusted his tie in the mirror. He and Teal'c had worn their clothes, save for ties and sport coats, on the plane, so they were finishing up in the bathroom of the meeting place.
"It is nearly time to meet with Senator Fisher."
"Yeah." Daniel sighed.
"Are you nervous DanielJackson?"
"There's a lot riding on this Teal'c."
"I have confidence you will convince them."
"This time it's we Teal'c...and I hope you're right."
"You boys ready?" Landry knocked and called.
Daniel looked at Teal'c and they nodded to each other in silent support then exited the bathroom.
Vala looked Daniel over and thought he couldn't look bad in anything...even those hideous uniforms they require him to wear on base. He cleans up quite nice...
"Ready?" Landry asked stopping at the chamber door.
"No, but let's get it over with." Daniel replied then turned to Vala. "You sit next to me and stay quiet!"
She saluted and followed Landry inside, Daniel scowled at her, took a deep breath and hoped for the best.
"My guess is it'll wear off in time." Arlos said and walked away with his mother's necklace.
Daniel didn't miss Vala's smirk and he silently counted to ten in Goa'uld, Egyptian and Latin after the initial shock had worn off.
"Guess we go back and wait it out." Mitchell said and led them out the door.
Vala slipped her arm into Daniel's while Teal'c covered their six.
"Will you take me out to dinner when we get home?"
"No."
"The mess hall is so boring." She moaned.
"Live with it!"
"You could give a little, I've had to put my life on hold while yours goes on."
"And who's fault is that?" He glared at her.
"Are you two at it again? You sound like my parents." Mitchell said.
"Really?" Vala smirked.
"Oh God." Daniel groaned.
"Jackson, dial us up."
Daniel pushed the glyphs to Earth then pressed the center crystal activating the gate, Mitchell input the GDO code and they stepped through.
"How'd it--" Landry started.
"Don't ask!" Daniel snapped and stalked out of the gateroom, Vala following with a grin.
"Colonel?"
"It appears the only cure for their togetherness is time." Mitchell answered the CO.
"Indeed." Teal'c nodded hearing his friend bickering with the thief on the way to change.
"Thanks for helping out huh." Daniel and Teal'c hugged.
"Indeed."
"Good luck on Dakara." Mitchell bade.
Teal'c turned to Vala who waved, Daniel gave her a look then Teal'c headed up the ramp.
"Don't be a stranger." Mitchell called.
Teal'c paused a moment then walked into the shimmering pool and vanished without ever looking back.
"He'll be back." Mitchell smiled as the gate shut down.
"Now, about that dinner..." Vala nudged Daniel.
The archeologist looked at the gate longingly.
Teal'c, come back!
