Rollie and Angie looked at each other and sighed in unison.
"Try the phone." She suggested.
He put it to his ear.
"Dead." He replied.
"Of course,no cell tower out this far." She shook her head.
"I don't want to be in this car when that storm hits." He said eyeing the darkening sky.
"That house has some lights on."
"Their phone could work." He nodded.
They exited the sports car and hurried down the road reaching the old Victorian house just as the rains came.
"I hope we don't scare then to death Rol." Angie said looking at her ghoulishly made-up husband.
"It is Halloween Ange."
"Still..."
He nodded and rang the bell.
"Don't be alarmed,we were on our way to--" Rollie started as the door opened.
"Hmm...early...name?" The old man asked.
"We need to borrow--" Angie began.
"Name?" The man iterated.
"We just need to use the phone, our car--" Rollie tried.
"Name?" The old man asked again.
The couple looked at each other and shrugged.
"Rollie and Angie Tyler." The Aussie answered.
"You're not..." The old man looked at them perplexed.
"Our car broke down and we wanted to borrow your phone to call for help." Rollie explained.
"Hmm...most unusual. Please wait here." The old man dressed in an old fashioned butlers uniform closed the door.
"How strange was that?" Angie asked wrapping her arms around herself as the wind blew harder.
The tattered clothing they wore weren't conducive to keeping warm.
Rollie wrapped his long arms around her and she settled against him.
"Welcome,I'm Angel...my what an interesting look." An elegantly dressed woman greeted opening the door.
"We were on our way to a Halloween party and our car broke down. Our cell doesn't work out here and we were hoping
to borrow your phone?" Rollie replied.
"Of course." She nodded and let them inside.
"You may use this phone." She added leading them to an old fashioned sitting room.
"Thanks." Rollie nodded and picked it up to call AAA.
"You have a lovely home." Angie said to the older woman.
"Thank you,it belongs to my Father."
"What's the address?" Rollie inquired.
"Tell them Hallows Eve...avenue. They'll know which house."
Rollie relayed the information and hung up.
"It'll be about thirty minutes." He said.
"Would you like something to eat or drink? We don't normally get guests that are li...like you."
"There's no one quite like Rol." Angie smiled at her husband.
"I'll take that as a compliment sweetie." He smiled back and glanced out the window as lightning streaked across the
sky and thunder followed.
"I hope that storm is past by the time the tow truck arrives." Angie commented.
"Make yourselves comfortable while I get some refreshments." Angel replied and left them.
"She seems really nice Rol and not freaked out by what we look like." Angie grinned and sat on the loveseat.
Rollie joined her and they clasped hands.
"I love you Ange...even if you do look like death warmed over." He smirked.
"You're one to talk." She punched him in the arm playfully.
"Here we are,tea and cookies."
"Thank you." The couple responded together.
"How long have you lived here?" Rollie asked.
"A very long time now." Angel smiled pouring tea for them.
"That crystal angel is magnificent." Angie said looking at the statue on the table beside her.
"Everything comes from my Father."
"What did your father do?" Rollie asked.
"He spread the word."
"A minister." Rollie nodded and sipped his tea.
"Are you two religious?"
Angie glanced at Rollie who got a far away look.
"I certainly believe in God...I came close enough to meeting him on more than one occasion." Rollie uttered.
Angel watched them and knew it was true. She turned to Angie who swallowed.
"God's really looked after us."She agreed squeezing his hand.
"Are you from Australia?"
"Yeah. I've lived here for several years though. I worked for Angie's dad until he died.
We're partners in the special effects business...and in life."
Angie smiled at him, eyes shinig with love.
There was a knock on the door frame and they all turned to see the butler.
"A word madam."
"Excuse me."
Angel left the room and Angie turned to him.
"I feel peaceful here Rol."
"I do too. I have a sense of...serenity."
Angie kissed him,not caring if they smeared their make-up.
"I love you Rollie Tyler, with my whole heart and soul."
Rollie hugged her.
"God has given me so much...I'm the most grateful for you though." He replied.
"It would seem the tow truck arrived sooner than anticipated." Angel said returning.
"No sense in both of us getting wet." Rollie said getting to his feet.
"It stopped raining, the storm appears to have blown itself out." Angel informed them.
"Oh,I'll go with you then." Angie stood.
"Thank you for your hospitality." She smiled at the older woman.
"We're here for everyone." Angel said and walked them to the door.
"Thank you again." Rollie smiled at her and then took Angie's hand and headed for the
flashing lights down the lane.
"Unusual for those kind of visitors." The butler commented coming up beside Angel.
"Not unheard of though. How long will it be before we see them again?"
"Not for a very long time."
"Good. Now,we have others to prepare for."
The butler nodded and closed the door.
Rollie put his arm around Angie as the tow truck driver started the rig.
"We'll call Mick from the garage." He said as they pulled away.
"I wonder how the haunted house is going over?" She chuckled.
Rollie shrugged but gave her a grin.
"Looks like another accident." The driver said as they slowed down to pass the police car and coroners wagon.
Rollie said a silent prayer for them and held Angie closer.
Angel's doorbell rang and the butler answered.
"Hi,we've had an accident--" The man began.
"Name?"
"We just wanted to use your--" The woman started.
"Name?" The butler asked again.
"Charles and Kim Rivers." The man sighed.
"We've been expecting you." The butler smiled and ushered them inside to the sitting room.
"Hello,I'm Angel...and you've started the journey to the Father."
"Huh? We just wanted to use the phone. We had an accident--" The man frowned.
"Mr.and Mrs. Rivers...you died in the accident. This is your first step on the way to God." Angel smiled warmly as she was bathed in a soft light from the heavens above.
